Inspiring Growth at Union

February 4, 2022

Continuing our two part series about our mission and vision for Union, this month’s blog post focuses on growth and what it means to us. In part one titled “Why We Care About Community”, we shared about why Union is more than just a facility for playing basketball. Sportsmanship and teamwork are just as important for players to learn as it is for them to learn good shooting form and basketball IQ. So what do we mean when we say we want to inspire growth in our community?

Inspiring Growth at Union

We want to inspire growth at Union in two distinct ways. First, we hope to inspire growth first through different levels of play. Union is a facility where we have the resources to help you improve your game and they are here for you to take advantage of. Each player that comes in should know that if they are looking to increase their level of play (no matter what level they are currently at), this is the place which they can do so. We hope players feel like they can develop skills to further their game and feel confident in playing with others. Second, we want to inspire growth through different stages in life. Whether you are in high school or working full-time, a youth or a senior, Union is here for you to come play. Basketball can be a lifelong way for us to engage in physical activity, and we hope to inspire all who come to keep playing throughout their life. Even if basketball is just a hobby for many of us, it is a great way to connect with others no matter your age or occupation.

What does Growth Look Like?

Growth as we have envisioned it may look different to each person that comes in. For someone who has a goal of making their high school basketball team, it might look like working on their fundamental skills such as ball handling, shooting and basketball IQ. For a parent, it may look like bringing their kids to come play so they can exercise together as a family. Whatever growth looks like for you and the game of basketball, Union is here to support you in your endeavours.

It is important as players and as a community to also have a growth mindset. This type of mindset perceives setbacks as challenges, that skills can be developed, and improvement is possible even when it is difficult. In contrast, having a fixed mindset sees failures as inability to achieve something, having a limited skill set that can’t be changed, and that if something is difficult, it is unachievable. We hope that Union fosters a growth mindset for those who come in. We know that your skills can be developed, that failure is not because of inability, but rather failure as a challenge that we can overcome if we push ourselves to and ask for help when we need to!

How We Are Helping to Grow the Game

We are confident that basketball can be for everyone - whether you are completely new to the game or have been playing your whole life, Union is a space where all skill levels are welcomed and encouraged to continue improving. We can help you do this in a few ways! This might look like renting our shooting machine for an hour to get some shots up, using our defence dummies and cones for practice, joining our league, or coming out to an organized drop-in session! We also provide a family-only drop-in session on Saturdays from 2-4pm so that families can play together. As well, our women’s drop-in session on Saturdays from 12-2pm is here to help grow the game for all that identify as a woman.

We hope to see you at Union soon! Basketball is a wonderful game that brings all people together. Will you be a part of our community?
